Retention 101: From the Why to the How (Part 1)

As the paradigm of higher education continues to shift and refocus the strategic work of our communities of learning, retention and persistence become an ever greater area of importance. This first module begins the conversation by looking at the shifting landscape, emerging pressures and how you can begin leveraging that knowledge to become a voice and champion for the persistence and retention of our students.

Audience: New Professionals, Mid-level or Advanced Professionals new to Retention Work

Participants will learn:

·   To identify the internal and external forces that influence the retention work in higher education.

·   To develop an understanding for key retention theory and research.

·    Key terminology, data structures, and enrollment funnels that are connected to retention work.

·    To develop an understanding for the institutional data, resources, and structures that will influence their work.

·    To develop an understanding of the importance of retention planning.

Getting Strategic on Retention (Part 2)

Presenters: Kimberlie Moock and Jeremy McQuigge

Building and aligning to the strategic priorities of our learning communities around persistence and retention has become a necessity for many OTR professionals. Being a voice for this important work means finding a level of comfort with common language used within the field, broadening your institutional awareness and deepening your divisional and unit commitments to advancing this work with an evidence based approach. 

Audience: Mid or Advance Professionals; Individuals that have direct responsibilities for retention strategies or serve on campus committees.

Participant will learn:

·   To develop an understanding for the institutional data, resources, and structures that will influence their work.

·   To identify key retention tracking, markers, results, and reporting that are being utilized in department and institutional programs.

·   To develop an understanding of the importance of the orientation and transition professional in retention planning.

·   To develop an understanding for the deep structure and institutional motivations that influence the work of a retention professional.
