NODA Internship Program

NODA Internships take place during the summer months, when most schools are implementing summer orientation programs and / or planning for fall programs. Currently, no academic year NODA internships exist.
Why a NODA internship? The NODA Internship Program plays a valuable part not only in the life of the intern but for the host institution as well. Interns gain valuable insight into varied methods of planning and implementing programs. They have the opportunity to be involved in many different aspects of orientation, to expand their knowledge base and understanding of the diversity in programs, to develop an extensive support and mentor base and to experience a variety of related areas. Through providing an internship experience, the host institution / program has the opportunity to gain from the perspective and background of an enthusiastic and fresh viewpoint on specific projects as well as in program implementation. The NODA internship program can offer the opportunity to have an impact on the future of orientation and the Student Affairs profession by connecting with and helping to teach the next generation of practitioners in our field. Its short term nature can also provide an economical way to increase the number of staff during a busy time of year, while increasing the ideas, the experience and the connections for your program. |
NODA Internships Are Designed to
Facilitate the matching of motivated, quality students with challenging, exciting orientation positions in institutions across the U.S. and Canada.
Encourage the renewal of our profession by creating employment opportunities for students interested in gaining orientation experience.
Typical Internship Tasks
A NODA Intern may: conduct research; develop an orientation manual; serve on orientation planning committees; assist in the implementation of programs; assist in student leader training and supervision; work with budget planning and management or any number of things. Internship providers should consider, and clearly state, position expectations, opportunities, areas of responsibilities and special projects as well as application requirements and program needs prior to posting the internship position.
Eligibility
Host Eligibility:
All host institutions must have at least one current members of the National Orientation Director’s Association throughout the internship period. The member need not be the direct supervisor of the intern. A supervisor must be identified and all application materials filled out completely.
Not a NODA member?
Only those host applications of institutions connected to NODA, or actively applying for membership, will be approved as official NODA internships and made accessible to candidates. If you are applying for membership at the same time as you are applying for an intern, please indicate that on the form where it asks for the name of the NODA member. Once membership is confirmed through NODA Membership Services, position will be eligible.

Intern Eligibility:
To apply for a NODA Internship, individuals must be either:
- A graduate student currently enrolled in a graduate program at time of application to the NODA Internship program or
- An undergraduate student who will complete their undergraduate degree prior to the internship start date and will be starting a graduate program in the fall.
Please Note: NODA Internships are intended to pair interns with institutions with which they have no previous experience. Therefore, a match between a student and his or her current institution is not eligible for sanction as a NODA Internship.
While all interns will have completed a Bachelor’s degree prior to the start of the internship, hosts may identify a preference for recent graduates or applicants with at least a year of graduate school experience if such a preference exists. Internship supervisors may also state other preferred qualifications. Please clearly identify these on the application form. Candidates should only apply for those positions for which they meet the specific qualifications.
Compensation and Length
Internship compensation packages and terms of service are determined by the individual internship provider.
In creating the position, Internship hosts should consider:
- stipend/wages (identify weekly/monthly/summer vs. hourly)
- any room and/or board benefits or packages;
- other benefits such as access to local campus resources, parking, accommodations for partners/children, etc. that will help candidates in their decision making process
- needed timeline of availability (i.e. flexibility of start and ending dates, needs of program/projects,)
Please identify any components in the compensation package that you would like the candidates to consider in their application process.
Length of service may certainly vary. Most internships will be 10-14 weeks throughout the period of May – August. Hosts may identify if dates are flexible; candidates should apply only for those for which they will be available the full length of the internship.
