First Year Experience Coordinator - (Student Services Professional II)

Under the general direction of the Dean of Students and with daily oversight by the Student Activities Coordinator, the First Year Experience Coordinator performs independent, moderately complex professional student service work to manage all aspects of New Student Orientation and welcome programs; leadership development; and first year student programming. Carries out daily assignments that affect CSUMB enrollment and retention goals.
1. Designs, plans, and coordinates all orientation and welcome programs offered to all new students and their families during the summer and prior to the beginning of each semester. Uses judgment to apply existing guidelines and procedures to various programs and situations. Makes recommendations to expand and enhance orientation programs. Serves as an active member of the Orientation Advisory Team and prepares meeting agendas and materials needed, and serves on department, division, and university committees. Manages the Orientation budget. Researches and prepares proposals for the expenditure of generated funds.
2. Collaborates with faculty and various campus personnel in order to plan effective orientation programs. Coordinates the scheduling of all events by making arrangements for food services, housing, facilitators and rooms for the programs to accommodate student and parent needs.
3. Recruits, selects, trains, supervises, and evaluates a large staff of Orientation Student Leaders and other student assistants. Develops and implements student staff training program to prepare the Orientation Leaders for their leadership roles.
4. Develops and disseminates information and publicity about the programs by way of flyers, brochures, correspondence, newsletters, and web sites. Collaborates with the Admissions Communication Coordinator and University Advancement in designing and producing program materials.
5. Coordinates evaluation, research and program analysis using information provided by program participants, leaders, faculty, and staff and other means deemed appropriate by the Coordinator.
6. Develops First Year student programs, in conjunction with the First Year Seminar, Student Activities and Residential Life that extends the orientation process through out the academic year. Supports existing traditions on campus, but also creates new traditions on campus, such as Family Weekend. Forms a Parent''s Council to connect with parents and first year students. Develops a class council that will continue each year with targeted traditions.
7. Develops leadership programs and activities. Creates an Emerging Leaders Program for new students to develop leadership skills. Coordinates with the Associated Students the development of Leadership Conferences for student leaders.
Other Functions:
1. Provides general advising and program support for the Student Activities Office, student clubs and Greek Letter Organizations.
2. Performs other duties and special projects as assigned.
Qualifications:
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS AND EXPERIENCE:
Equivalent to a bachelor''s degree from an accredited college or university in one of the following areas related to: behavioral science, public or business administration or a job-related field AND two (2) years of professional experience in student services or a related field. A Master''s degree in a job-related field may be substituted for one (1) year of professional experience. Additional specialized experience during which the applicant has acquired and successfully applied the knowledge and abilities shown above may be substituted for the required education on a year-for-year basis.
KNOWLEDGE AND ABILITIES:

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: Leadership and administration of Office of New Student Programs and Parent Affairs, including budget management:
New Student Programs- Coordinate, oversee and evaluate New Student Orientation programs for incoming freshmen, transfer and graduate students. Coordinate, oversee and evaluate parent and orientation programs. Expand orientation programs as necessary to meet the needs of the University (new student populations, increase in size, new academic programs, etc.) Chair the campus-wide New Student Orientation Committee. Act as a liaison to University departments and organizations for program development and implementation related to Orientation. Coordinate the production and dissemination of all publications and marketing materials. Manage the annual budget. Keep abreast of national trends on orientation programs, students in transition and first year experience. Respond to internal and external constituency issues. Represent UWT within regional and national professional organizations. Work collaboratively with the Department of Student Involvement to plan a fall campus-wide welcome event. Work collaboratively with General Education and Enrollment Management to plan events for incoming freshmen students. Develop and coordinate Freshmen Convocation. Facilitate the collaboration of programs within the Division of Student Affairs that target first year students.
Parent Affairs- Serve as the primary contact point for the University for parents. Act as a liaison to University departments and organizations for program development and implementation related to parent resources and support.. Develop and maintain a Web site of campus resources for parents. Develop and distribute a parent newsletter on a quarterly basis.
Leadership and administration of Peer Adviser Program, including budget management and staff recruitment, supervision and training:
Select, train and supervise UW Tacoma Peer Advisers. Provide Peer Advisers with training, tools and strategies to support new students. Work collaboratively with General Education to provide support to freshmen students in the CORE program. Coordinate and facilitate quarterly programming efforts by the Peer Advisers for the campus community. Oversee the Peer Advisers in their responsibilities related to New Student Orientation. Encourage the Peer Adviser program to collaborate with campus offices and departments to provide support to new students. Ensure the completion of necessary administrative tasks of Peer Advisers.
Collaborate and consult with campus and community; serve on committees and attend meetings as departmental representative as appropriate.
Serve on the Student Development Departmental Leadership Team.

Qualifications:
