Outstanding Research Award

Purpose:

To emphasize and celebrate the importance of research in the field of orientation, transition, and retention, the National Orientation Directors Association has an established research award. Each year, one graduate/doctoral student will be awarded $1,000 plus the annual conference fee for the upcoming year (including the annual membership fee) in recognition of excellence in research and contributions to scholarly pursuits.

Eligibility:

The Outstanding Research Award is tenable by graduate/doctoral students who are either enrolled in graduate studies and in the process of completing a thesis or dissertation during the 2008-09 academic year, or who have completed their degree requirements within one year prior to the annual fall conference at which the award will be bestowed. The scholarly research should highlight topics within the field of orientation, transition, and retention.

Award recipients will be invited to present their thesis or dissertation topic at the National Orientation Directors Association Annual Conference, and be invited to submit the completed study in manuscript format for possible publication, in part or in full, in the Journal of College Orientation and Transition.

Application:

Although your transcript will need to be submitted by mail, please submit the following information electronically:

  1. Outstanding Research Award Application Form (Online Form)
  2. Extended abstract in APA style. Abstracts should be between 500 and 750 words, including references, tables, and figures. Submissions must relate to issues and topics concerning new student orientation, transition, and retention. Please submit this abstract as a Microsoft Word document.
  3. An official transcript (with verification of current enrollment, if appropriate) at the institution where doctoral work is being (or has been) completed.
  4. Two letters of recommendation*, specifically from:
    • Graduate research advisor or person who is supervising the graduate research thesis or dissertation.
    • A separate faculty member within the specific graduate program, who may comment on the student's contributions to the graduate program.

*Recommendations must be submitted via email with an electronic signature.

Deadline:

All application materials must be received no later than Friday, June 27, 2008. Submit the application via the online form. Transcripts should be mailed to the NODA Home Office at the address below. All other application materials should be sent electronically to the NODA Home Office.
