The Nontraditional Student Network provides a forum for orientation professionals to identify both emerging needs and effective program formats to support students over eighteen years old who are initiating or resuming education after having progressed through different life experiences. Network activities promote the sharing of research, proven methods and approaches that can be replicated and applied to orientation events for nontraditional students (mature students, non-traditional, continuing students, etc.) on all campuses.
A major focus of Nontraditional Student Network activities is to identify how effective orientation helps nontraditional students optimize their first term and first year experience. Issues addressed range from the "transition to campus process" to the identification of effective student service delivery methods for this student audience. Participants gain practical information and resource materials on how to create, implement and maintain events that serve adult learners effectively. Network members are invited and supported in presenting sessions on adult learner topics at regional and national conferences. All participants are encouraged to contribute research, scholarly case students and applied practice articles for three annual Nontraditional Student Newsletters, the Orientation Review and other professional journals.
