Where Respect Happens: University of Utah

The orientation staff at the University of Utah introduces themselves with preferred gender pronouns at orientation. At the Student Stories panel during one session this year (2017), the first question asked was why the staff does this. Ben Myers, He/Him/His, immediately explained that they say that as a welcoming and inclusive campus, the staff wants every student to feel comfortable. He added that we cannot make assumptions based on appearance, so sharing gender pronouns is a way to acknowledge identity and expression. After this response, the entire room of family members began applauding.

"As a supervisor and social justice advocate, I could not have been more proud or inspired in that moment," shares John Michael Pantlik, Associate Director, Center for New Student & Family Programs.
