 Chad Henderson
Director of Events, Programs & Services

When Chad Henderson transferred to Hamline University in Saint Paul, Minnesota after two years at a community college in Illinois, he was on track to be an elementary school teacher like his father. However, after working with Lamar Shingles - now NODA's Director of Membership Engagement and Operations - during his last year of undergrad, he shifted gears to a Master's Degree in Student Affairs from University of St. Thomas.

"Like most people in student affairs, you don't go to school expecting to get into student affairs," says Chad. "You learn that it's a profession once you get there. For me, I realized that my contribution to education could be outside of the classroom environment. I didn't have to teach in order to teach."

Chad's time at St. Thomas started off with an assistantship in Campus Life and Residence Life in a split position. He was in charge of all school spirit initiatives while also supervising an international house of 14 men and women from Uganda. He then became a Residence Director and gained his first event planning experience with summer conferences. After graduate school, he spent over two years as a Residence Director at Loyola University in Chicago and then worked at a community college in Minnesota doing student conduct.

"Throughout my entire career I have wanted to give back to students in a powerful and meaningful way," says Chad. "I liked the idea of working for NODA because the idea that my work can have a ripple effect on the entire field of student affairs if I do my job correctly, thus the ripple effect I could have on an even greater number of students - it was really an attractive opportunity."

At NODA, Chad not only leads the Events Team - consisting of Events Specialists Geida Cleveland and Shannon Gilligan Wehr - but he works with every member of the team to ensure that the programs and services offered to the Association's members meet its strategic goals. "I try to focus on the educational content. I want to make sure that we are truly an educational organization at the highest level, in line with the biggest student affairs associations," he says.

"I’m so grateful to get to work with Chad on the 2017 Annual Conference," says Program Committee Chair Abbey Wolfman. "I’ve learned a tremendous amount from him and am thankful for his friendship. I find Chad to be extremely organized, patient, and just the type of leader the Association needs. We are lucky to have his professionalism, humor, and skills."

Geida Cleveland says, "Chad is a great part of the team! His energetic personality has created a welcoming environment at NODA that all staff appreciates. As a supervisor he is supportive and encouraging of your professional growth. He is full of innovative ideas on how to support our members and help NODA grow as an organization!"

Outside of work, Chad loves sports. He serves as a fast-pitch softball umpire, bowls in a league, and enjoys visiting golf courses across the country. He also enjoys spending time with his wife Keelin and their dog Wrigley.
