NODA Appropriate Language Statement

As educators of students and colleagues, conference presenters must be particularly sensitive to and aware of the issues of language, and the perpetuation of stereotypes and erroneous assumptions. Individual Publication Standards and Approval

Regional Conference Publications – Regional conference materials will reflect the particular
conference theme, logo and location. Within budgetary guidelines however, these materials
must reflect the highest professional standards possible. Because expenditures for conference
attendance most often are determined at the institutional level, both the design and content of
conference materials must be appealing to, and appropriate for, review by professional in the
orientation field and their supervisors. Prior to printing, final drafts of these publications must be
reviewed by the Regional Coordinator and Director of Regions.

Region I

Region I (WA, OR, ID, MT, AK, BC, AB, SK, YT, NT)

Region I, though geographically dispersed over a large landmass is definitely mighty in spirit. Members of Region I have made it a tradition to get together during the annual conference for an all‐region dinner outing. Regional conferences are typically hosted on‐site at the host campus and over the past few years, two‐year and community college members have come together for drive‐in meetings and conferences. As with many regions, t‐shirt swapping and sticker sharing is highly encouraged at regional and annual conferences.

Special interest groups (Pac 10 schools, CSU system schools, etc.) within the region have also hosted drive‐in workshops.

Region VII

Three states (Indiana, Michigan, and Ohio) and one Canadian Province (Ontario) make up Region VII. The Regional conferences range in size from 160-200 participants, predominantly undergraduate students.

Many of the conference highlights including awards, program offerings, community service, and special events are coordinated by conference planning committee members who may have never been in the same room, but who connect via phone and email to prepare a great professional development opportunity. Graduate students participate in the conference by coordinating resume critiques and serving as judges for our undergraduate case study competition. Each attending institution participates in our "fashion show" where on representative shows off school- specific swag and clothing that is commonly used during orientation and transition programs.
