Using Leadership to Integrate International and Domestic Students

Presented By: Teresa Lostroh, International Orientation Coordinator, University of Nebraska-Lincoln

 Date and time: February 27, 2017   1:00 pm - 2:00 pm CST / 2:00 pm - 3:00 pm EST

Successful integration initiatives go beyond simple interactions and provide meaningful opportunities for collaboration. This session highlights the University of Nebraska-Lincoln’s two-day Global Leadership Retreat, through which international and domestic students find commonality, develop skills and competencies, and improve intercultural communication. Learn practical tips for how you could adopt, adapt, and apply this best practice at your institution.

As a result of attending this webinar, participants who are new to the field, as well as more experienced professionals, will:

  • Examine a successful model for providing meaningful engagement and collaboration among domestic and international students
  • Learn the steps required to build a leadership retreat
  • Be equipped to design initiatives similar to the one described in the presentation

About the Presenter: Teresa Lostroh, International Orientation Coordinator, University of Nebraska-Lincoln

Teresa Lostroh is the international orientation coordinator for New Student Enrollment at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln. Teresa’s primary responsibility is to create new programs to accommodate UNL’s fast-growing international population and to revamp existing programs to align with desired outcomes. She proposed and created the International Welcome Team, which is comprised of 25 international and domestic leaders who welcome students at the airport, lead groups at orientation, and host monthly social programs. Teresa has created a variety of other initiatives and recently reworked the curriculum for the Global Leadership Retreat, which brings more than 300 international and domestic UNL students together each year. Before joining UNL’s staff, Teresa was an ESL teacher in Extremadura, Spain.
