Emily Krechel, Director, New Student and Transition Programs, Elon University

Date and time: October 18, 2017   2:00 pm - 3:00 pm CST / 3:00 pm - 4:00 pm EST

Orientation leaders are the most critical component of any successful orientation program. Imagine what can happen when orientation leaders move beyond serving as information givers and tour guides to charismatic leaders who are inspirational role models for new students. This webinar will introduce the concept of Transformational Leadership and demonstrate how one institution focused their training and staff development on this theory.

Learning Objectives:

  • Participants will understand the main tenants of Transformational Leadership
  • Participants will know to utilize the Multifactor Leadership Questionnaire to assess staff
  • Participants will identify actions they can take to utilize Transformational Leadership in their staff training and supervision plan

About the Presenters:

Chrissy Roth-Francis, Ed.D Chrissy has worked within orientation, transition, and retention for more than 15 years: as a student leader, graduate intern, professional, and veteran NODA member. As the Director of New Student Services at UC Berkeley, Chrissy and her team oversee a week-long orientation for 8,500 new undergraduates, onboarding communications and publications, and a student staffing structure of 600. It’s in this student staffing structure where Chrissy loves to witness the evolution of the students into transformational orientation leaders, having an impact on the new students greater than could have been imagined. Prior to working at UC Berkeley, Chrissy oversaw graduate and international student orientations at the University of Southern California. Chrissy holds a doctorate in educational leadership, a master’s in higher education administration, and a bachelor’s in journalism. Chrissy is currently a NODA General Board Member and has served the Association in numerous capacities, including network chair and regional conference host.

Emily Krechel Emily has worked within orientation, transition, and retention for more than nine years: as a student leader, graduate intern, and professional. As the Director of New Student &Transition Programs at Elon University, Emily and her team oversee a four-day welcome week orientation that involves 18 Head Staff members, 120 Orientation Leaders, and 200+ Orientation Move-in Helpers. Emily also oversees the First-Year Summer Experiences, the Life Entrepreneur Program for sophomores, and the First-Year Study Abroad program (slated to begin in Fall 2018). Prior to working at Elon University, Emily served as the Associate Director of New Student Services at UC Berkeley. It was there that her passion and love for student leader development and transformation flourished. She had the opportunity to redesign staff training for a team of student coordinators, mentors, and leaders that framed their experience through the lens of Transformational Leadership. Emily holds a master’s degree in Student Affairs in Higher Education from Miami University, Ohio and a bachelor’s in sociology from James Madison University. Emily is currently the Chair of the Commission for Admissions, Orientation, and First Year Experience within ACPA and has been a member of NODA since 2010.
