NODA Name Change

Dear NODA Members,

It is my privilege to share some exciting news!

Upon recommendation from several task forces, research of other associations, and input from membership and other key constituents, the NODA Board of Directors voted to adopt a name change for the Association. In order to preserve brand recognition, the Association will retain "NODA” as a pseudo-acronym but will now be known as the "Association for Orientation, Transition, and Retention in Higher Education”.

As an inclusive community of practice that seeks to be the premier association for orientation, transition, and retention professionals, it is important that the name of the Association more accurately reflect the Association’s entire mission and purpose, and more accurately describe its membership. The previous name of the Association – National Orientation Directors Association – has served us well over the years but now too narrowly describes the Association’s mission and purpose, and especially its membership. In particular,

• The membership of the Association expands beyond the United States, making the word "National” inaccurate. NODA currently has an international reach in membership.

• The scope of the association is broader than orientation. More accurately, the mission and purpose of the Association is to address orientation, transition, and retention.

• The membership of the Association includes more than directors of orientation programs, including undergraduate students, graduate students, coordinators, and various mid- and senior-level professionals.

This new name reflects the Association’s membership and purpose and moves us towards our strategic goal of being recognized as the leading voice and authority related to the orientation, transition and retention of college students.

Over the next several months we will engage in a marketing plan to broadly share our new name with internal and external constituents. We look forward to your involvement in these efforts and appreciate your continued input and support through this process.

Cynthia L. Hernandez, Ph.D.
President, NODA – Association for Orientation, Transition, and Retention in Higher Education
