NODA Association Update from Joyce Holl
February 2018

I recently had the experience of being a volunteer for Crew 52 with the Minnesota Super Bowl Host Committee. I didn't volunteer because I would get a bunch of 'cool stuff' (although it was pretty cool). I did it because I wanted to showcase how great Minnesota is and I was always taught to give back.

The experience was extremely rewarding. After each 8-hour, cold and snowy shift, I remember feeling a great deal of energy and gratification because I felt like I was really making a difference by showing visitors how great my home city is. People were generally excited walking around all of the Super Bowl Live activities, and it was a crazy, fun experience.

As I reflect on this experience, I think about the many volunteers that NODA utilizes. As a nonprofit, NODA needs its volunteers so that we can keep our costs down. Whether our members are serving on a conference program committee, a standing committee or volunteering on site at a conference, every role is important and needed.

If you haven't volunteered with NODA before, I highly encourage  you to do so. It's regional conference time, which is a great opportunity to start getting involved. As a volunteer at your regional conference, you will meet people and grow your network and you may have the same feeling of gratification that I felt for doing something good. I want to thank all of the NODA members who have volunteered and given back to our Association!

I am thrilled to share that the NODA Excellence Fund (NEF) Committee awarded the first round of scholarships. Six recipients received awards for travel expenses to attend regional conferences. Scholarships were awarded to four professionals from Regions IV, V, VI, and IX and two graduate students both from Region IX. NODA is able to provide these scholarships because of member contributions to the NEF Fund. If you haven't contributed you can at any time during the year. Check out the NEF page on the NODA website and make a contribution today so that we can continue to support those who need financial assistance.

NODA is part of a governmental consortium with other student affairs associations. This consortium gives us an opportunity to stay engaged in legislation that impacts higher education. NODA recently signed on to two letters providing feedback to the Higher Education Act of 1965 (HEA). Congress was seeking feedback on the reauthorization of HEA and NODA, along with other associations, provided feedback pertaining to the impact of financial aid, student aid, support for minority-serving institutions and low-income students, civic engagement, expansion of new learning opportunities promoting quality and efficiency. We will continue to monitor and advocate for legislation that impacts higher education and student affairs.

As you plan for your orientation programs, consider bringing NODA to your institution for an External Review. NODA can assess and evaluate existing processes and programs to identify gaps and establish success metrics based on the CAS Standards. Teams are booking fast and I encourage you to reach out to me if you have interest in conducting a review.

Until next time...
