The OTR Catalyst Grant is designed to catalyze new research that will advance both knowledge and best practices in orientation, transition, and retention. Prospective research studies, pilot studies, exploratory research projects (qualitative and quantitative), as well as assessment-based best practices (as defined by Upcraft and Schuh, 2002) that may be generalized will be considered for this award. In the 2014-15, up to six catalyst grants (two $1,000 grants and four $500 grants) will be awarded to emerging OTR researchers. All grant recipients will also receive the registration fee for one annual NODA Conference or regional conference and a year’s membership to the association. Grant funds may be used to support professional development, researcher(s) stipend, and project expenses. All funds (100%) must be used to support the proposed project.

In the fall of 2003, the NODA Executive Board created a grant fund (name changed to Special Project Funds, fall 2014), to support member-driven initiatives, including regional and association programming and projects.  Special Project Funds have been used in the past to assist with the funding of conferences, drive-in workshops, meeting sessions and more.  NODA welcomes project und proposals that advance its mission and can include programs, initiatives, or research.

The Special Project Funds is allocated funding in the annual NODA budget process.  Individual project funds may not exceed $500 per request or per program/initiative/research project.  To ensure an equitable distribution of the funds, no exceptions to the individual grants are given.  In addition, to make sure that all members of NODA have an equal opportunity to access these funds, selection criteria and a timeline have been established for project fund requests.  This documentation is maintained at the NODA Association Office.  The Administration of the NODA Special Project Fund is the responsibility of the Executive Director of NODA.  The President Elect will annually appoint a committee that includes the Executive Director, to select NODA project fund recipients.

Recipients of these funds must provide an assessment of the program associated with the approved project fund.  It is NODA’s intent to be good stewards of the membership’s funds and thus, funding provided by this program should make a difference to the membership and support NODA’s mission.  Therefore, a program assessment is essential and funding is not available to programs that do not provide the required assessment in a timely manner.
